Merton writes these lines that grab ahold of my soul and shake me to my core, lines like this one. We are here, now, this is our state, bound to time and space yet we are destined to something greater, we are destined for eternity. If love is the door to eternity, what does that translate into for us? Everyone yearns to be loved, it's hardwired into who and what we are as human beings. Perhaps it is because love is the door to eternity that we yearn for it so much. Love is part of what makes us eternal. It's only because of God's love that we even exist, our desire for love could ultimately be a desire to be eternal with the One who is both eternal and Love, God. The very fact that love is eternal means that we can't capture all of what love is and that is precisely why we want it, it will take an eternity to gasp.
